Escape Room Accelerates Math Learning In Moorestown

Moorestown, NJ -- Author and engineer Kit Wong is taking the new gaming and tourism trend of Escape Rooms and using it as a teaching tool for students of all ages.

The Math Accelerator shows children of all ages how to view math in a way that Wong says the students look forward to class with enthusiasm, and have fun doing it.

“We don’t use books, we don’t count on our fingers and we don’t memorize,” said Wong, whose two daughters are now studying math two grades higher than their same grade peers thanks to her program. “We work to make learning fun and give kids the confidence they need to think outside the box, ask questions and solve complex problems.”

The escape room -- or Mathscape as the kids like to call it -- turns basic math logic and concepts into interactive puzzles that force team members to work together and think outside the box to figure out the code to escape the room.

They have one hour to escape, and clues are hidden throughout the room. It is the midterm or final text after the kids take the course, certainly a much more pleasant experience that an hour written test, Wong says.

“Parents are welcome to try the escape room with their kids,” Wong said. “But we have yet to find a parent who can solve the puzzles before their child does.”

Math Accelerator also offers the escape room as part of a birthday party or team building event. Families can do it together as well and finish the night off with a pizza party in the lounge.

The mission of the Math Accelerator Program is to find the fun in learning Math so it is not so intimidating and awkward for many kids.

Once they have the confidence to learn, they are often eager to try new things and advance to higher levels—all important elements in lifelong learning, Wong said.
