Tpr. Marcellus E. Bethea, who died during training, was a devoted father and husband, according to a fundraiser for his loved ones.

BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ — A state trooper who died during training was a devoted husband and father, according to a fundraiser supporting Tpr. Marcellus E. Bethea's family.
Bethea, a trooper stationed out of Moorestown, died during a training session for elite law-enforcement unit May 5 at State Police headquarters in Ewing. His death came a day before his daughter's second birthday, says the Troopers United Foundation, which is raising money for Bethea's loved ones.
He was 33.

"Marcellus Bethea was not just a devoted New Jersey State Trooper," the organization said, "he was also a loving husband and father who always prioritized his family.
The eight-year State Police veteran has been remembered for his commitment to serving the public. In his youth, Bethea participated in New Jersey State Police Trooper Youth Week as a student at Northern Burlington County Regional High School in Mansfield Township.

Bethea, who grew up in Columbus, graduated from the high school in 2009 and then from Rowan University four years later with a Bachelor of Arts in Law & Justice degree. He became a trooper in 2016, graduating with NJSP's 156th training class.
The fallen trooper's passions were rooted in faith, family and service, according to Bethea's obituary.
"Throughout his career, Marcellus exemplified courage, integrity, and selflessness, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the community he served," his obituary says. "His commitment to duty and unwavering dedication to public safety not only left an enduring impact on all who knew him but also made his community a safer place."
He was also an avid fan of the New York Giants, finding joy in rooting for his favorite team alongside friends and family.
Bethea died while training to join the State Police TEAMS Unit — a group of troopers who handle extraordinary emergencies, such as rescues, underwater searches and counterterrorism operations. Troopers must complete rigorous training to join the unit, which only has 30 members.
"Today, the selection process (for the TEAMS Unit) is the most demanding among any in the Division," the NJSP website says. "Members are selected based on written resume, physical agility test, background investigation, oral interview, and the successful completion of the physically and mentally demanding underwater recovery course."
His death was placed under investigation, and no potential cause of death has been disclosed.
Bethea leaves behind his wife, Katarzyna, and his daughter, Bella. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made via the Troopers United Foundation's fundraiser for his family.
