Family Mourns Moorestown Woman Who Earned Highest Army Honor

Doris Ann Borkowski, age 99 of Moorestown, NJ, was awarded the Emma Baird Award, the highest Army award for volunteer service.

MOORESTOWN, NJ — Doris Ann Borkowski, (nee Garthaus), age 99 of Moorestown, NJ, passed away at Brandywine Assisted Living on July 3, 2021.

Doris was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, and resided at several Army bases with her late husband Adam before they retired in the Tinton Falls/Eatontown area. She moved to Moorestown 11 years ago.

Doris devoted her life to her husband, children Ron and Denise, and to volunteer service to the Catholic Chapel and Army Community Service at Fort Monmouth.

She was awarded the Emma Baird Award, the highest Army award for volunteer service through ACS. Hundreds of soldiers and their families benefited from her kindness and her ability to understand and serve their needs or refer them to the many services offered through ACS.

A source of special joy to her over the past 40 years was her extended family, Jill and Gilbert McDonald, Mount Laurel, NJ, and their children, Paul (Donna), Patrick (Carol) and Katherine (Frank) who knew her as Grandma. Gillian (Paul), Shane and Andrew (Patrick) McDonald and Ryan and Alexis Motondo (Katherine) loved her as their Great Grandma.

Doris provided love and support to us all. But above all, she cherished time spent with her family and friends and will be very deeply missed by those she leaves behind.

Doris was predeceased by her spouse, Adam Borkowski, her son Ron, and several siblings. She is survived by her daughter Denise of Lone Tree, CO, nephews Adam Garthaus (Nadeen) of Fort Mill,SC, Mike McCarthy of Philadelphia, PA, Tom McCarthy of Phoenixville, PA and nieces Cheryl Carraro of Louisville, KY, and Meg Winicki of Austin, TX.
