Loud Booms May Be Heard Across Parts Of South Jersey: When, What To Expect
The booms come from training exercises being done at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, the base said.
SOUTH JERSEY — Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is ramping up its training in July, according to a post on the New Hanover's Police Department's Facebook post.
The base's May training caused loud booms of varying intensity and led some South Jersey residents to call their local police departments.
Below is the base's training schedule, based on the New Hanover Police Department's Facebook page:

- July 5 through July 16: the noise level will be "moderate" due to rotary-wing aerial gunnery that may include .50 caliber weapons, rocket fire and rotary cannons
- July 17 through July 24: the noise level will be "high" due to heavy crew weaponry, training and catering missions that may include mortar live fire, howitzer fire and cratering changes
- July 25: the noise level will be "moderate" again
- July 26 through July 28: the noise level will be "low" due to ground small arms and light crew weapons training that may include small firearms and rifles
- July 29: the noise level will be "moderate" again
- July 30 through July 31: the noise level will be "low" again
The base schedule may change based on requirements and weather, the Facebook post said.
In addition, the amount of cloudiness on a given day may affect the sound level of the booms and the distance from the base that the booms can be heard, according to the Facebook post.
