Moorestown Friends School Captures Consumer Bowl Title

The team won the title by 30 points over second-place Voorhees.

Moorestown Friends High School defeated Voorhees High School and Randolph High School to win the 20th annual New Jersey Consumer Bowl, a quiz-style competition that encourages students to become savvy consumers.

The school, represented by Captain Joshua Murdy,  Alex Barrett, John Barton and Alex Horn, was making its first appearance in the competition since 2013, the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement this week.

It scored 90 points to snag the title, followed by Voorhees with 60 and Randolph with 55.

Moorestown Friends’ triumph marks the end of a fourth-month competition in which 80 schools from 18 counties put their consumer know-how to the test on topics that included financial fraud, charitable giving, home improvement regulations, and store pricing and refund laws.

“You have a keen understanding of the laws and regulations that protect you as consumers,” Acting Attorney General Robert Lougy told the three finalists before the beginning of the final round. “That’s important because teens are under constant advertising pressure. There are a lot of people out there who want to separate you from your money. Your success in the Consumer Bowl proves you all have the tools to ensure you’re spending wisely and know how to avoid being taken advantage of in the marketplace.”

The Consumer Bowl competition, established in 1997 by the Division of Consumer Affairs, is designed to educate young adults on a variety of consumer issues.

“It’s never too early to learn how to spend wisely,” Acting Director of the Division of Consumer Affairs Steve Lee said. “Each year the Division receives thousands of complaints from consumers who have lost money through unfair contracts, illegal scams, and false advertising. The Division works tirelessly to educate the public on how to avoid being taken advantage of.”
