The event comes at a critical juncture during ongoing battles between Israel and Palestinian militant groups. Hamas led a surprise attack Oct. 7 against Israel, killing at least 1,400 Israelis and capturing both Israeli soldiers and civilian hostages.

Israel has since conducted retaliatory strikes in Gaza, which have killed more than 2,700 Palestinians. Around 1 million Palestinians — nearly half of Gaza's population — have been internally displaced, according to the United Nations.
