Moorestown Patch Letter to the Editor: Democratic Candidates Show No Meaningful Support for Relay For Life

Kathy Sutherland writes about her disappointment in the candidates' failure to show "any meaningful support" at the community event.

To the Editor:

This past Friday, I joined a few hundred others at the Moorestown High School fields for the 2nd Annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

I walked in memory of my mother and my sister, both who were lost to this terrible disease. I was so touched by the way our community came together to remember those we've lost and to honor those who are survivors or are still fighting, and I was thrilled to see our local high schoolers leading the efforts of the evening.

There was something about the event I found deeply troubling, though. I will start by saying that I'm a Democrat. I've volunteered and voted for countless Democratic candidates through the years, and I'm not ashamed to say that.

So you can imagine how disappointing and disturbing I found it that the three Democrats who are running for Moorestown Township Council could not be bothered to support this event in a meaningful way.

In fact, event volunteers mentioned that they did not attend pre-event meetings, though they registered a team with their last names.

They left long before the event started. They did not return at any point in the night, not for the ribbon cutting, not to honor the survivors as they walked the track, and not for any other part of the festivities.

There site laid empty all night. This bothers me as a Democrat, because I feel these people do not represent the party I belong to.

This bothers me as a Moorestown resident because I feel these people do not represent the community spirit of this town.

But most of all, this bothers me as someone who has lost loved ones to cancer. This is disrespectful to me and every other person who has lost someone to cancer.

It bothers me, and though I will be supporting other Democrats on the ballot this year, the Moorestown Township Council candidates on the Democrat column will surely not have my vote in November.
