Moorestown Patch Letter to the Editor: Don't Forget the Real Reason Behind Memorial Day

The Republican candidates for council remind residents of the reason behind the holiday.

To the Editor:

As we enjoy the sunshine and find time to relax with our family and friends during this long weekend, we wanted to take a moment to reflect and recognize the the true reason behind Memorial Day.

We join our fellow Moorestown residents in remembering the brave men and women throughout American history who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could be free. When these brave individuals fought for their country, they didn’t ask if they were defending men or women.

They didn’t ask if those back home they were fighting for came from a certain race or religion. They didn’t fight for the rights of just Republicans or Democrats.

These soldiers knew, as all the soldiers that came before them knew, that they were heading into harm’s way for something larger than themselves.

They didn’t join the military because they wanted to die for our nation, but it was a risk they knew they were taking. And in many cases, they and their families made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of God and Country.

They gave their lives so that we could live our lives at home in peace.

So that our children, and our children’s children, would grow up free to be whatever they wanted to be. It’s a badge of honor their families will always wear.

And it’s a debt that we as Americans will never, ever be able to repay.

We extend the deepest gratitude and thanks to all the veterans and Gold Star families here in Moorestown. We honor you, we remember your loved ones, and we will never forget what was lost in the name of our nation’s freedom.
