MOORESTOWN, NJ — The Moorestown Theater Company (MTC) is offering theater-goers something different beginning Thursday night. MTC is bringing the cult hit “13: The Musical” to Moorestown this weekend.

“13: The Musical” is coming-of-age musical about discovering that “cool" may be where we least expect it.The double-cast show includes 48 actors, ages 12-17 years old, playing the roles of Geeks, Posers, Cheerleaders, Jocks, Wannabes, etc.

It’s a show about fitting in, and follows MTC’s productions of “Hairspray Jr.” and “Shrek Jr.,” which both followed the same theme of diversity and inclusion.

“The lead is a 12-year-old who’s about to turn 13,” MTC Artistic Director Mark Morgan said. “His bar mitzvah is coming up, and he’s moving from New York, where he knew everybody, to Indiana. He’s looking for people to come to his party. … It’s something new, and it’s something everyone can relate to.”

The main character, Evan Goldman, must deal not just with moving from a big city to a small town as he enters puberty, but his parents are also going through a divorce. The kids talk about kissing and making out. Morgan said MTC assigned a PG-13 rating, mostly as a warning that there is mature subject matter being discussed.

“Any teen should see it and any parent of a teen should go with them to see it,” Morgan said. “It’s a great way to start a dialogue.”

The show is a hit among teenagers, and had a run of 105 shows on Broadway. Ariana Grande began her career in the Broadway show before landing her role as Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon show “Victorious.”
Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown composed the score.

The show opened Thursday night at the William Allen Middle School. It continues with performances on Friday and Saturday nights, 7 p.m., and Saturday afternoon, 2 p.m.
