New Beginnings Highlight Month in Moorestown School District

A new superintendent and 2 new board members highlighted the changes, Brandon J. Pugh writes.

It is hard to believe that the 2015-16 school year is now complete, although the last month has been busy on the Board and in the District.

This includes the appointment of new board members and a new business administrator, high school graduation, and the adoption of the District technology plan, among other items.

To begin, I would like to congratulate each individual who graduated on June 22 from Moorestown High School.

The 316 members of the Class of 2016 are moving on to military service, the workforce, and two and four year degree programs, including at Princeton University, Yale University, Georgetown University, The College of New Jersey, and military service academies, among many others.

Nearly half of the class received college scholarships during the Senior Awards Night, with many more students being recognized for scholastic, service, athletic, and art achievement.

At the June 21 meeting, the Board appointed two individuals to serve until the next reorganization meeting in 2017, which fill the vacancies resulting from the two resignations in April.

Both Dimitri Schneiberg and Sandra Alberti have been sworn in. Also, Dr. Scott McCartney officially took over as Superintendent on July 1, and I would like to thank to Carole Butler for serving as Interim Superintendent.

The Board adopted the 2016-19 Technology Plan. This plan identifies goals for technology in the district by year, including the future of the District’s one-to-one student laptop program, network upgrades, and efficiencies, such as reduced printer usage.

As part of this plan, the District will be switching to a new website tentatively on July 1, which should be much easier to navigate. The website will still be accessible at www.mtps.com.

On June 30, the Board approved the contract for Paul Whitman, who will serve as the District’s Interim Business Administrator until June 30, 2017.

Lynn Shugars, who has served as the Business Administrator/Board Secretary for multiple years will be missed, and her willingness to lead the district in times of need cannot be commended enough.

As a reminder, the District will be offering Extended Day Care starting in September for students in grades K through 6. The program will be at all four elementary schools, and will include games, various activities, and homework support. Additional information can be found here.

MoorArts’ 2016 Summer Musical at Moorestown High School will be on July 8, 9, 13, 15 and 16 at 8 p.m., and on July 10 at 2 p.m. This summer’s musical is Aida.

Visit www.moorarts.org for additional information and tickets.

The next regular monthly meeting of the Moorestown Board of Education is Aug. 9, 2016, 7 p.m. in the William Allen Middle School Media Center.

Please note that regular 2016-17 Board meetings will begin at 7 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m.

Since there is not a regularly scheduled July board meeting, the next edition of this column will not be published until August, but do not hesitate to reach out in the meantime.

Enjoy the summer and I look forward to seeing you in August!
