Regular weekday service on NJ TRANSIT’s River LINE light rail service will resume on Monday, June 10, NJ TRANSIT announced Sunday night. Weekend service resumed on Saturday, June 8.

It had been suspended while the transit service conducted emergency mechanical inspections and repairs to the fleet of light rail vehicles. The inspections took 48 hours, according to NJ TRANSIT.

During regularly scheduled inspections, some wheels on a light rail vehicle had failed to meet the required safety standards, according to NJ TRANSIT.

There was a defect in a single batch of wheels that were delivered by the original manufacturer, NJ TRANSIT said. NJ TRANSIT conducted an inspection of every wheel on each vehicle out of what NJ TRANSIT called "an abundance of caution."

A sufficient number of vehicles have successfully passed the safety inspections to resume regular weekday service on Monday, according to NJ TRANSIT.

Special express shuttle bus service will operate between the four highest ridership stations along the River LINE (Trenton Transit Center, Florence, Beverly/Edgewater Park and Walter Rand Transportation Center) during the morning and afternoon peak periods to enhance capacity, NJ TRANSIT said.

“When it comes to the safety of our customers and employees, we will not cut corners or take shortcuts. While the decision to comprehensively test every wheel on every vehicle was made out of an abundance of caution, it was the only responsible decision to make in the interest of safety,” NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Kevin Corbett said. “I want to thank our customers for their patience during this time and I applaud the outstanding effort by our River LINE employees and our partners at Bombardier for their non-stop effort in restoring service as safely and quickly as possible.”

Express bus service between Trenton, Florence, Beverly/Edgewater Park, & WRTC will operate in both directions with the frequency shown below (approximate):

  • Every 30 minutes between 5:45 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
  • Every 30 minutes between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

All River LINE monthly passes and one-way tickets, as well as any NJ TRANSIT monthly bus passes and tickets will be accepted on board the express shuttle bus.
