Obituary: John Makel

John S. Makel, of Moorestown, NJ, passed away on Feb. 17, 2017, at the age of 89.

John had worked for the Burlington County Trust Company in Moorestown for over forty years as Vice President and Senior Trust Office Manager. He served as Trustee for 44 years and Chairman of the Board of the Memorial Hospital for 17 years and Chairman of the Board of the Virtua Health System at the time of its creation.

He received the NJ Hospital Association’s Trustee of the Year award in 2001 and was honored as one of Moorestown Citizens of the Year in 2000.

John had been active in many organization serving as Past President, former Captain and exempt Member of the Relief Engine Co. of Moorestown, Moorestown Emergency Squad for 12 years serving as Treasurer and First Lieutenant.

He had been a member and Past President of the Moorestown Rotary Lunch Club since 1972. John had served on many Township Committees, as well as numerous Burlington County organizations thorughout the years.

Husband of Luise (nee Hahling). Father of Kirsten Makel, Karen Clementi and her husband Vincent. Brother in Law of Elizabeth Makel.

Visitation will be Thursday evening, Feb. 23, 2017, 6 p.m.–8 p.m. at the Lewis Funeral Home, 78 E. Main Street, Moorestown, NJ. Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday Feb 24, 2017, Chapel of the Evergreens, 309 Bridgeboro Road, Moorestown, NJ.
