The South Carolina police officer charged with murder after a video surfaced showing him shooting a black man in the back is a native of South Jersey, the Courier Post reports.

Michael T. Slager, 33, is charged with murder in the shooting death of 50-year-old Walter Scott, of North Charleston, S.C. Scott was apparently unarmed and attempting to run away following a traffic stop for a broken tail light Saturday morning, according to the New York Times.

Slager attended Lenape High School, and worked as a waiter in Voorhees, Camden County, before joining the military, according to the Courier Post.

The video shows Slager shooting Scott eight times. Slager claims he used his taser on Scott first. He claimed on the police radio that Scott had taken his taser, according to the New York Times.

North Charleston police Chief Eddie Driggers told reporters Slager has been fired during a news conference on Tuesday, according to CNN.

The incident drew comparisons to the shooting death of Michael Brown. Darren Wilson, a white police officer, was not indicted in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager in that Missouri case, and many people told CNN they believe the outcome of that case is having an impact on the way this case is being handled.

The video was taken by a bystander who was on his way home from work. The man who shot the video spoke with NBC’s Lester Holt on Wednesday.

A video of the incident is attached to this post. It contains graphic images and language.

The incident is being investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the FBI and the Justice Department, according to the New York Times.
