MOORESTOWN, NJ - The Moorestown Improvement Association’s annual meeting is set for Thursday, March 14, 7 p.m. in the renovated library room at the Moorestown Community House. The presentation is open to members of the public of all ages.

The program, “Strawbridge Lake: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow,” will focus on the 70-acre park and recreational area which is a favorite destination of community residents for walking, jogging, picnicking, canoeing, fishing, or just communing with nature.

George and Amy Gravenstine, from the Strawbridge Lake Beautification Committee, will provide an update on the lake’s current situation and recent efforts by the township and local volunteers to improve it.

They will also discuss challenges facing Moorestown in order to preserve one of its unique areas for future generations. Kimberly Bunn and Lynn Schill, co-authors of the best-selling book “Images of America: Moorestown” will give a short presentation about Strawbridge Lake’s storied past.

Those in attendance will learn how the lake was initially created as a New Deal project during the 1930s, using federal funds to employ laborers and acquire adjacent parcels of land. In a definite “win-win” outcome, Moorestown gained a stretch of green recreational area for posterity while many unemployed townspeople survived the Great Depression by working on the project, thus keeping their dignity and family’s well-being intact.
