Possible Tornado Reportedly Touches Down Near NJ Turnpike

MOUNT LAUREL, NJ — Authorities in Burlington County Saturday were investigating reports of a tornado touching down around Interstate 295 and the New Jersey Turnpike in the Mount Laurel area.

The National Weather Service dispatched crews to examine video footage of the possible tornado and to assess the damage on the ground amid reports that a vehicle was tossed into a building by the force of the wind.

“We are in the process of investigating,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Nick Carr. “We have received some footage of the storm in question.”

A vehicle reportedly struck an office building on Gaither Drive, landing on its side at around 2 p.m. on Saturday.

If confirmed this would be the third tornado to hit New Jersey this season, said Carr. The state averages about two tornadoes a year, he added.

Forecasters warned of the possibility of additional rain and thunder in Burlington County, but it’s the Atlantic City area under a severe storm warning. Hot humid weather is fueling the storm activity, and an excessive heat warning has been issued for the region, which is sweltering in 90-degree heat.

Residents should be mindful of the weather conditions and pay heed to weather warnings, reminded Carr.
