Virtua Hospitals Earn High Marks From U.S. News

Multiple Virtua hospitals ranked among the best in the state in U.S. News and World Report's latest hospital rankings.

Virtua Voorhees is ranked No. 7 in New Jersey and No. 9 in the Philadelphia Metro Region in the magazine's hospital rankings for 2019-20. Virtua Marlton was included in the Virtua Voorhees ranking.

Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes ranked No. 11 in the same rankings and tied for 13th in the Philadelphia Metro Region. The publication also lauded Virtua Memorial Hospital and Virtua Willingboro Hospital for their high performance in specific areas.

Rankings include the honor roll, top ranked hospitals in 12 specialty categories and the top ranked hospitals by state and metro region.

Across the 12 specialty rankings — which cover categories like cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, and nephrology — U.S. News & World added two new measures that are patient centered: patient outcome and patient experience.

Virtua hospitals earned “high-performing” designations in the following areas:

• Virtua Voorhees for treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart failure, and for performing colon cancer surgery, hip replacement surgery, and knee replacement surgery.
• Virtua Memorial in Mount Holly for treating COPD and heart failure, and in the specialty of urology.
• Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes in Camden for treating COPD and heart failure, and in performing heart bypass surgery. (Note: This hospital is listed in U.S. Newsunder its former name, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center.)
• Virtua Willingboro for treating heart failure. (Note: This hospital is listed in U.S. News under its former name, Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County.)

“All Virtua hospitals strive to provide outstanding care that’s close to home,” said John Matsinger, DO, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Marlton-based Virtua. “The U.S. News rankings are confirmation that South Jersey residents can access top-notch care right in their own community at Virtua hospitals.”

In each specialty category, U.S. News and World Report looks at how successful a hospital is at sending patients home, according to Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News and World Report.

The methodology adjusts for how sick a patient was when they were admitted to the hospital so that hospitals that admit sicker patients are not penalized in the rankings. The second patient-centered measure added to the methodology is patient experience. Data from a federally mandated survey was used to assess this measure, according to U.S. News.

The survey covers topics like how good doctors and nurses were at communicating with patients and how well a patient understood how to take care of themselves after leaving the hospital.
