Walmart Evacuated For 'Major' Gas Leak In Burlington County: Officials

Route 38 is closed in both directions near the store.

Update, 12:15 p.m.: Route 38 and Always Drive have reopened.


LUMBERTON, NJ — A Walmart store in Burlington County was evacuated Wednesday morning because of a large gas leak, officials said.

The gas leak occurred on Route 38, near Walmart in Lumberton. The roadway will remain closed in both directions from Savory Way to Smithville Road until further notice, police said.

Walmart and Always Drive will not be accessible because of the "major" gas leak, according to the Lumberton Fire Department.

State transportation officials reported the gas leak and road closure at about 9:45 a.m.
