I-295 Shutdown Stemmed From Woman Exiting Moving Ambulance In South Jersey

The incident led to massive traffic jams on the highway.

MOUNT LAUREL, NJ — A woman was seriously injured after getting out of a moving ambulance in an incident that shut down Interstate 295 on Friday, officials said.

The ambulance was traveling northbound on I-295 when the women exited the back of the ambulance and "impacted the roadway" at 1:54 p.m. in Mount Laurel, according to a State Police spokesperson.

The woman sustained "serious injuries" and was brought to the hospital, police said.

Police identified her as a 37-year-old Sewell resident who was a rear-seat passenger in the ambulance. Authorities have withheld her name.

It wasn't immediately clear how or why she got out of the vehicle.
