Extended Benefits - First 26 weeks of Unemployment Benefits are paid by the state.
Under normal economic times the states are responsible for paying Unemployment Benefits up to a maximum of 26 weeks. When we are in extreme bad economics the Federal Government extends UE benefits in Tiers.
Anyone who is currently receiving extended unemployment benefits ( beyond the first 26 weeks funding by the state) Congress did not pass the funding before going on recess on Dec. 13th This means on Dec 28th all people recieving extended benefits will be cut off. This impacts 1.3 million long-term unemployed immediately and will impact up to 4.9 million by end of 2014. This is a national crisis.

Here are the extended Tiers for 2013.
Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) Tiers for 2013
Tier 1: 14 weeks
Tier 2: 14 weeks if the state unemployment rate is 6% or higher
Tier 3: 9 weeks if the state unemployment rate is 7% or higher
Tier 4: 10 weeks if the state unemployment rate is 9% or higher
In the case of NJ we are slightly below the 9% UE rate at 8.4% so there is no Tier 4 either way for those who exhausted Tier 3.
We hold weekly job search support group meetings in Mendham Twp Library every Monday night at 6:30 which will resume weekly after the holidays.
