On Dec 16th, the Lone Eagle Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol(CAP), of Peapack-Gladstone, provided the color guard at the Wreaths Across America(WAA) ceremony held at the Our Lady of the Mountain Church, Long Valley. This WAA location was first organized last year by Cadet SMSgt Sarah Guida, now a senior at West Morris Central High School, Long Valley, as her Girl Scout Gold Award project. After the ceremony, wreaths were laid on about 242 veteran graves at local cemeteries.
Wreaths Across America began 24 years ago with 5,000 wreaths placed on graves at Arlington National Cemetery. This year over 1,565,000 wreaths at 1,422 locations nationwide were placed including 244,700 wreaths placed at Arlington National Cemetery by over 75,000 volunteers. The Lone Eagle Composite Squadron meets on Wednesday nights at the Scout Cabin, Borough of Peapack-Gladstone, NJ. Youth can start the cadet program at age twelve. Civil Air Patrol, the longtime all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary, is the newest member of the Air Force’s Total Force. In this role, CAP operates a fleet of 560 aircraft, performs about 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center, and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 80 lives annually. CAP’s 57,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief, and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. CAP also plays a leading role in aerospace/STEM education, and its members serve as mentors to 24,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs.
