Morris Township PBA #133 trades badges for hammers for a day

Morris Township, NJ - January 1: Members of the Morris Township Police Benevolent Association took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather to help build a five family house on Carlton Street in Morris Township, NJ. The project is just one of several residential buildings under construction by the Morris Habitat for Humanity.

PBA member Alvin Chan spearheaded the effort and organized the PBA response to the Morris Township project. “There is an immediate need for volunteers to help build these low-moderate income housing units,” said Chan. “This is a small way for us to give back to the community and support an amazing organization.”

Chan was amongst the men and women that wore only sweatshirts on these unseasonably warm days and were spared the typically cold, snowy December days.

“The weather was fantastic for building,” Chan said. “However, we would have come out to help Habitat for Humanity in any weather whatsoever.”

There is both inside and outside work to be completed. Some small heaters will help workers as the temperatures begin to plummet in the coming winter months. PBA #133 members assisted with interior fire code compliance and insulating the units.

PBA member John Hall explained how Project Manager Bob “the builder” prepared the troops for a day jam packed with hammering, screwing, cutting and climbing.

“Bob gave us a quick and thorough safety lecture and explained the history of the Habitat for Humanity,” said Hall. “Then,” he continued, “we were quickly climbing ladders, using table saws and power drills.”

“Before you know it,” Hall continued, “we were climbing high into the rafters above the second floor to screw support beams in the attic.”

Local PBA VP Clay Boeninghaus hopes to be back to the job site again in the near future. “We had a really great day,” said Boeninghaus. “There is still a lot of work to be done and we are looking forward to coming back now that the holidays are over.”

The Habitat for Humanity is based in Randolph, NJ. Money is raised through various sources including donations and sale of donated household items and appliances at their Re-Store on South Salem Street in Dover, NJ.

Organizations may schedule a volunteer work detail by visiting the Habitat for Humanity website o calling the Randolph office at 973-891-1934. Volunteers should plan on a full days work from 8:30am-4:00pm. Building occurs most Tuesdays through Saturdays in and around Morris County. Habitat for Humanity has projects all over New Jersey for those who wish to volunteer from outside of the area
