Preserve Greystone Group Appealing Landmark's Demolition Set for April

Remediation process underway after contract was awarded in August.

As remediation work continues on the shuttered Greystone Psychiatric Hospital, with its most famous building – the Kirkbride – set to be demolished in April, one organization is appealing the state’s contract with a company to perform the work.

According to dailyrecord.com, Preserve Greystone has filed a notice of appeal in New Jersey Appellate Court which seeks a review of the state Department of Treasury’s decision to award a contract.

The organization continues to contend the state did not fully explore alternative methods to preserving the park, as a handful of offers from private investment companies and developers were made to keep the area intact, the report said.

Original estimates for the complete deconstruction of the property was in the ballpark of $50 million, which would come from the state. The contract awarded in August came in far lower at $34.5 million.

Once the demolition is complete, the property, which straddles Morris Plains and Parsippany, the 165 acres of land will be given to Morris County and used as open space.
