Rabid Skunk Found In Morris Plains, Health Officials Warn
Residents are asked to be alert and to report any sick or injured animals to the Morris Plains Police Department.
MORRIS PLAINS, NJ — A skunk recently found in Morris Plains has tested positive for rabies, according to local health officials.
On Friday, the Morris Plains Board of Health and Morris County Division of Public Health learned that a rabid skunk was in the Morris Plains area.
Health experts advise that anyone, or anyone’s pet, bitten or scratched by an unfamiliar animal, or an animal suspected of having rabies, immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and seek medical help.

Rabies is a contagious and deadly disease that can affect all mammals. The disease is spread through bites, scratches, or any exposure to an open wound.
Morris Plains health officials remind residents that rabies is a threat to all mammals, including cats and dogs. Pet owners are responsible for making sure their furry friends are caught up on all necessary vaccinations.

‘Once an animal becomes infected with rabies, it may display aggressive behavior, may appear to be drunk or injured, and/or have trouble walking. Rabid animals may attempt to bite or attack people and domestic animals,” Morris County health officials say. “Other signs of rabies infection include disorientation, loss of appetite, excessive irritability, unusual vocalization, and abnormal behavior, restlessness, jumping at noises, excessive salivation, tremors, convulsions, or paralysis.”
Residents are asked to be alert and to report any sick or injured animals such as raccoons, skunks, foxes, woodchucks, bats, and feral (stray) animals to the Morris Plains Borough Police Department at 973-538-2284.
