Halloween is over, so what are you supposed to do with all those left over pumpkins? Well, learn from them, of course! The St. Virgil Academy first and second graders participated in what is now being dubbed as the “First Annual Great Pumpkin Drop.” Using pumpkins that were originally decorated to look like the main characters from books the second graders had just read, the students decide not to let those pumpkins just sit around and go to waste. Instead, in partnership with their friends from first grade, the students created packages that would keep those pumpkins safe when dropped from a height of approximately 7 feet. The teams put their heads together to design packaging that would appropriately protect those precious pumpkins. The boxes, duct tape, bubble wrap, tissue paper and, yes, even a swimming pool noodle, were soon taking over the classroom. Many congratulations to the winning team of Joseph Roman, Ellen McDonough, Levanya Shenoy and Reese Moreland whose pumpkin withstood the journey. As for the others—well, let’s just say it’s a good thing the pumpkin pie holiday is right around the corner!
