Turnovers Cost Colonials Against Rams

Two interceptions led to two touchdowns for the visiting Randolph Rams as they handed Morristown their fourth loss of the season Saturday to the tune of 27-13. 

he turning point of the game was an 87-yard interception return for a touchdown by the Rams’ Brennan Corcoran with 39 seconds left in the first half that seemingly broke the game open for Randolph 20-13.

In a must win game for both squads, the Morristown Colonials offense came out firing on all cylinders with a masterful 57-yard drive after the opening kickoff.  It only took four plays with the highlight being senior tailback, Danny Supple bursting up the left sideline for a 26-yard sprint. The key block was supplied by pulling guard, senior, Freddy Ruiz, who took out a pair of Ram defenders with a devastating block that was followed up by wide receiver, Ricky Lorenzo’s crack back block on the Ram’s outside linebacker.

On the very next play, junior quarterback Dallas McCall lofted a pass up the right sideline, where Jordan Powell wrestled the ball away from the Ram defensive back in the end zone for a Colonials’ touchdown.

After a rare Ethan Bolson PAT miss, the Rams came right back with a 10 play, 61-yard drive to take the lead 7-6.  Rams quarterback Connor Logoya hit Jason Cohen with a 6-yard TD pass. On their next possession, the Colonials bounced right back, taking advantage of a Ram penalty on a 4th down punt that gave them another chance with a first down. Dallas McCall immediately hit a streaking Ricky Lorenzo on a fly pattern up the left sideline for 44-yards. Junior fullback, Trey Gwynn then blasted into the end zone behind the drive blocks of junior center, Anton Buchner and senior left guard, Freddy Ruiz, and the Colonials retook the lead, 13-7, after a Bolson kick.

The Rams took the lead for good with a 78-yard drive with 5:42 left in the first half.  The touchdown came on a Jason Cohen 17-yard draw play that fooled the Colonials aggressive defense and afforded the Rams a 14-13 advantage.

With the clock running down in the half, the Rams’ Corcoran picked off a pass in the left flat and raced 87 yards for a touchdown on the deciding play of the game.

The Colonials never found the end zone in the second half and the Rams added a final score in the third quarter to end the game 27-13.
