15 NJ Highways Where Drivers Go Way Too Fast – And Break The Law

New Jersey drivers go fast. So much so, that as many as 98 percent of drivers on some highways exceed the speed limit.

Think about it: when road conditions on major highways are good, how often are you actually driving the speed limit? According to data released by the New Jersey Department of Transportation, probably not that often.

NJ DOT collects data on the average speeds on New Jersey roads, and it shows that the average speed actually driven is above the speed limit on most roads. The most recent data shows the average monthly speeds in 2017 and covers 91 different stretches of road.

In Morris County, for instance, Route 15 in Jefferson has a speed limit of 55 miles per hour, but the average driver is doing 63 miles per hour. About 92 percent of all drivers are going faster than the posted speed limit.

An important note about this data: because it's averages, the data covers times when the highways are bumper-to-bumper traffic, and times when reaching 90 miles per hour is possible. It does not differentiate between traffic-heavy speeds and clear roadway speeds, and data is only collected during the week.

The highest speed limit anywhere in New Jersey is 65 miles per hour, but most roads have posted speed limits under that.

Here is the list of 15 New Jersey roads that have the highest number of drivers who exceed the speed limit. The list includes the percentage of lawbreakers, and where the speeds were recorded:

  1. Route 202 southbound, West Amwell: 98 percent
  2. I-80 eastbound, South Hackensack: 96 percent
  3. Route 15 northbound, Jefferson: 94 percent
  4. Route 72 eastbound: Woodland Township: 93 percent
  5. Route 322 east and west, Hamilton Township, Gloucester County: 93 percent
  6. I-295 northbound, Logan township: 91 percent
  7. Route 40 eastbound, Carney’s Point: 91 percent
  8. Route 31 north and south, Readington: 88 percent
  9. Route 208 northbound, Franklin lakes: 87 percent
  10. I-195 westbound, Upper Freehold: 87 percent
  11. Route 18 northbound, Marlboro: 86 percent
  12. Route 202 southbound, Branchburg: 86 percent
  13. I-78 eastbound, Greenwich Township, Warren County: 83 percent
  14. Route 55 northbound, Vineland: 82 percent
  15. Route 322 westbound, Monroe, Gloucester County: 80 percent
