This grant comes at a critical juncture, as the United States continues to grapple with an opioid epidemic. Preliminary data from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics show that more than 107,000 people died from a drug overdose in the 12-month period ending in Dec. 2021.
Opioids, particularly synthetic opioids like fentanyl, were responsible for approximately 75 percent of these deaths. Furthermore, around 3,000 of the total overdose deaths occurred in New Jersey, according to the CDC.
