MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — One person is dead and another is injured following a major crash on I-80 Thursday morning.
Around 8:45 a.m., police were called to I‑80 west at milepost 34.4 in Rockaway Township on reports of a crash.
Authorities discovered that a Chevrolet was reversing on the right shoulder of Exit 34B when it entered the exit lanes and was struck by a Hyundai, police said.
The Hyundai then crossed all lanes of travel and struck the rear of a Honda and the driver’s side of a Kia, officials added.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 91-year-old Boonton man, was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to authorities.
The driver of the Kia sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital as well, police said.
No other injuries were reported.
State police are still investigating the crash.
The multi-vehicle accident resulted in all of I-80 west's lanes being closed in the area, according to the NJ Department of Transportation.
Officials said I-80 westbound was closed near Exit 34, with traffic being detoured using Exit 34B to Route 15 northbound.
All westbound lanes had reopened around 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
