MORRISTOWN, NJ — The Seeing Eye is introducing artificial intelligence into its guide dog training through a new pilot program centered on Meta smart glasses.
The Morristown-based nonprofit said this week that it will teach handlers how to safely and effectively use the wearable technology alongside their Seeing Eye dogs.
AI-powered smart glasses can help people who are blind or have low vision access information hands-free through voice commands, cameras and mobile app integrations. However, The Seeing Eye said the technology must be used carefully to avoid disrupting the communication and trust between a handler and guide dog.
“Artificial intelligence is groundbreaking for its potential to significantly enhance the lives of people who are blind or low-vision,” said Karen Leies, President & CEO at The Seeing Eye. “The Seeing Eye’s goals are to ensure that this exciting technology is available to all who wish to embrace it, used safely, and in a way that supports the extraordinary partnership between a handler and their Seeing Eye dog."
Training will follow a tiered, safety-focused approach that includes online instruction, regional workshops and integration into The Seeing Eye’s monthly classes for new handler-and-dog teams beginning in September 2026.
The pilot program is supported by grants from a Seeing Eye graduate and the ADP Foundation.
Founded in 1929, The Seeing Eye breeds and trains dogs to guide people who are blind or have low vision. The nonprofit does not receive government or insurance funding and instead relies on contributions, grants, bequests, and other planned gifts.
