MORRISTOWN, NJ — The town has moved forward with a developer to transform a handful of vacant properties along the Morristown Green.
A collection of storefronts on North Park Place and Washington Street have remained vacant, some of which have been empty for more than 15 years. Others, including the Century 21 department store, closed during the pandemic.
On Tuesday, the council introduced two ordinances that would designate SJP Properties, the same builders of Morristown's M Station on Morris Street, as the developers for the vacant storefronts.
"This is an important step forward for a part of downtown that has been waiting for new life," said Mayor Tim Dougherty. "These properties occupy a highly visible location in the heart of Morristown, and their redevelopment will have a tremendous impact on our downtown. This proposal gives us an opportunity to bring new housing, commercial activity and retail to the area while creating a more vibrant and connected downtown for residents, businesses and visitors."
The town expects SJP to transform the properties into partial residential and commercial spaces, including office space and retail, as well as parking areas.
"M Station has been a transformative development for Morristown, and the redevelopment of North Park will advance our long-standing vision for a more vibrant and elevated Morristown Green," said Steven Pozycki, founder and CEO of SJP Properties. "Through the arrival of a skilled workforce, high-quality retail, and premier housing, we'll reactivate this area and restore its place at the center of the town."
Specifics on the project are expected to be discussed as the project moves forward through the town's planning and approval processes. Check back with Patch as developments are made.
