Bickford Theatre at the Morris Museum, 6 Normandy Heights Rd, Morristown, NJ, 07960

This event is part of a lecture series, Breakfast University, dedicated to arts and culture. What is the American Sound? Does such a thing exist in the realm of concert music? During the 1920s and 30s, composers, music critics, entertainment executives and audiences believed in the idea of an American Sound, and they worked hard to promote their various points of view in the concert hall, via newspaper articles, through advertising and on film. This course explores the origins of two quintessential American masterpieces — George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Duke Ellington’s Symphony in Black — and their relationship to contemporary American culture. Using film clips, music excerpts, and popular dance steps from the 1920s and 30s, Professor Anna Celenza of Johns Hopkins University introduces participants to the wide range of musical genres and styles that influenced Gershwin and Ellington (from spirituals, blues, and Klezmer music to Tin Pan Alley songs, opera, Ragtime and even symphonic forms).
Doors open at 9:15 AM for coffee, and the lecture starts at 10:00 AM.

Join MHHM's Curator of Education, Karina Filipowski, and Senior Museum Interpreter and Researcher, Cynthia Winslow, for a virtual lunchtime talk on food history at Macculloch Hall.
Corn has been a staple of diets in North America for centuries. This program explores the origins of corn, its spread across the world, and its use at Macculloch Hall in the 19th century.
While George Macculloch's garden journal answers questions about what fruits and vegetables grew on the Macculloch's 26 acres, Louisa Macculloch's handwritten recipe book covers what was eaten at Macculloch Hall. MHHM has adapted the historic recipes for modern kitchens.
During this program, MHHM staff will make corn fritters. Participants will receive a copy of the recipe to follow along during the program.

Morris Museum

In this major exhibition, candid photography—unscripted, unposed images taken from everyday life—by eleven contemporary artists explore the lives lived in the nation’s most densely populated and ethnically diverse state. Garden State Lens presents scenes of New Jerseyans going about their everyday lives. We see them raise their families, earn a living, come together as a community, and enjoy the state’s great outdoors. Powerful images—some printed at titanic scale, others more modestly sized—upend the typecast idea of our state through popular television shows and social media. More than 100 photographs on view instead offer nuanced and authentic glimpses of the incredible human tapestry that makes contemporary life in the state so exceptional.
Exhibition Dates: Friday, October 16, 2026 - Sunday, March 14, 2027
Museum Hours: Wednesday - Sunday 11:00AM to 5:00PM

She has lit up venues from Salmonfest in Ninilchik, Alaska, to Americanafest in Nashville, to The Bitter End in New York City.
