Celebrating My "Whoa" Moments
Californikate reminisces on two decisions in her life that have helped to define her: enlisting in the Coast Guard & joining roller derby.
There have been two times in my life where I can look back on a decision I made and say “Whoa!” Granted, as the mother of two active young boys and wife to a member of the Port Authority Police Department, I seem to say “whoa” a lot in our daily lives…. But the “whoa” I am talking about is one of those critical moments, those monumental decisions, that shaped me into who I am. These are the choices that helped me to realize my strength, my confidence, and my courage to do anything.
My first big “whoa” moment was when I was 17-years old: I decided to enlist in the United States Coast Guard. I wanted to break away on my own, travel, meet new people and take a step into the unknown. It was a 10-year commitment that I will never regret. While working in the military I learned how to become a leader and how to help others. For more than six years, I sailed the sea on a 378-foot cutter. Our main job was stopping drug boats in the middle of the ocean, counting fish, and helping refugees. After spending six years on a boat, I decided that the nursing field was the way for me to go. For my last four years of service, I went to medic school and spent my time in military clinics all over the United States. I can honestly say that serving in the military is an experience I will never forget. Not only did it shape me into a better person but I also have a lifetime of memories.
My second big “whoa” moment in my life was the moment I decided to play roller derby. I remember calling my husband on the phone and saying “Hey, I think I want to play roller derby” and hearing silence. For me, this was a big decision. We had just moved to New Jersey and I didn’t know anyone. I hoped derby would help me meet new friends but, in the end, I gained a family. I remember feeling nervous the first time I hit the track in my four-wheeled quad skates, but I also knew that this was something I could do. Now five seasons later, I play a sport that requires all of my heart, passion and strength. For me, my roller derby experience has been very similar to my military experience. I have grown in my strength and confidence. The military taught me to never give up while roller derby has shown me that if you push yourself and work hard you can become an amazing skater. Both roller derby and the military have taught me teamwork and honed my leadership skills. Both of these experiences have been important chapters of my life that I will never regret. I am glad to have found both and look forward to continuing my roller derby career and seeing where it takes me next.
