Christie: Driver's Licenses For Illegal Immigrants 'Irresponsible, Dangerous'

Governor says bill would be vetoed if it reached his desk.

Saying he is disturbed by such a thought, Governor Chris Christie blasted the New Jersey legislature Monday afternoon for considering driver’s license eligibility for undocumented immigrants.

Bill A-4425, introduced in May of this year, would establish the driver’s license for residents who cannot prove lawful presence in the United States. Support for the bill has gained steam recently, as hundreds rallied outside the statehouse Monday to show support.

But the state’s top politician said he’ll put the brakes on the bill if it reaches his desk.

“I am disturbed by the Legislature even considering making undocumented individuals eligible for New Jersey driver’s licenses,” Christie said in a statement. “As a former United States Attorney, I know that the driver’s license is the single most important piece of homeland security information. Yet the Legislature proposes giving that to people with no definitive proof of their identity.”

In the wake of terrorist attacks that killed more than 100 in Paris over the weekend, along with governors in the United States telling President Barack Obama their states would not accept Syrian refugees, Christie cited safety as another concern.

“To consider doing this in the current environment is not only irresponsible, but dangerous,” the statement continued. “If it were to ever reach my desk, it would be vetoed immediately. Protecting the security of the people of New Jersey is the governor’s single most important responsibility.”
