College Student’s Volunteerism in Morristown Pays Off

Morris County resident receives a national scholarship for her community service in Morristown

Ebony Ashford of Rockaway Township, New Jersey, received a $1,000 Golden Anniversary Scholarship from the Delta Research and Educational Foundation (DREF). Established by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., in 1967, DREF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports scholastic achievement, public service programs, and research initiatives focused on African-American women. The DREF Golden Anniversary Scholarship recognizes undergraduate and graduate college students who give back to their communities by sharing their time and talents. Ashford was one of 50 individuals nationwide to receive an award.

Ashford is committed to giving back to her community, especially the youth. She is an active volunteer with Unified Sports, an initiative of Special Olympics that brings together people with and without intellectual disabilities to compete on the same team. An avid recreational basketball player, Ashford enjoys coaching children and uses sports to help build their self-esteem and encourage teamwork. As a former participant of the Delta G.E.M.S. Institute and the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy (youth programs of the Morristown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.), Ashford returns frequently to each program to advise and mentor the young ladies currently enrolled in the programs.

“I believe each person has a responsibility to make the world a better place for future generations. As a beneficiary of the generosity of people and organizations in my community, I feel it is an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to reciprocate,” Ashford remarked. “I also just really enjoy helping people.”
