MORRIS PLAINS, NJ — No matter how much time one spends in animal rescue, sometimes they see some new lows. That's what happened when the Second Chance Pet Adoption League took in Panda, who had been abandoned outside a county animal shelter inside a bag tied to a drainpipe by the property.

"Had it not been for observant shelter staff and volunteers who heard her barking and crying and searched the property thoroughly until she was found," Second Chance wrote on social media, "she would have died a slow horrific death in that bag and no one would have known. We really can’t think of any excuse besides deliberately wanting to torture this sweet defenseless girl."

Second Chance did not name the shelter where Panda was found.

Panda also came to Second Chance's vet with several injuries and issues, including a misaligned jaw, severely rotting teeth a "horrific rotting odor" coming from her mouth. They aren't sure whether her jaw broke from trauma or injury, whether it was incidental or accidental. But they're raising funds for Panda's care.

Second Chance says the senior dog is a sweet, social little girl who craves attention and somehow hasn't lost faith in humans.

But the shelter provided an update Saturday with some encouraging news. She was eating well and smelling better after her shave down and dental work. Many of her teeth were removed, but her bottom jaw stabilized once recovered from surgery.

She's been spayed too and right on time. Panda had a fluid-filled uterus that likely would have turned into a deadly infection soon if she hadn't received care.

"Thank you for your support of this sweet senior’s care!" Second Chance said.
