Victim ID'd In Fatal 2-Vehicle Collision That Closed Route 31

A two-vehicle collision on a New Jersey highway became deadly on Friday, police said. The road remained closed in the area.

Details were revealed in fatal crash involving a box truck colliding with a garbage truck that happened on Route 31 on Friday, police said.

The roadway remained closed and detoured in the area almost eight hours after the crash. The crash happened at 8 a.m. on Route 31 near Glen Manor Drive in Glen Gardner, police said.

Freddy Nieves, 33, was killed and another remained critical Monday, three days after the box truck and garbage truck crashed in Hunterdon County, authorities said

Nieves and Frank Myers, 55, also of Phillipsburg were in the garbage truck when it made an angled collision with another truck. Both were ejected, and the garbage truck overturned.

The two victims were flown to Morristown Medical Center, where Nieves was pronounced dead.

The other truck went off the road struck and struck a traffic signal. The driver of that truck, Jan Nowak, 58, Steger, Ill. suffered minor injuries.

An investigation is ongoing, police said.
