2 Possible Tornadoes In N.J. After Storms Leave Damage

The National Weather Service said it's investigating whether two possible tornadoes touched down in New Jersey after Tropical Storm impacted the region.

The NWS sent a team to Browns Mills in the Pemberton area, and another team to Howell to investigate two possible tornado sitings, according to Joe Miketta, an NWS meteorologist.

Workers at a Home Depot managed to capture what appeared to be a funnel-shaped cloud in the parking lot. Read more: NWS Investigating Possible Tornado In Howell, Police Say (Video).

Others caught what appeared to be a giant funnel-shaped cloud in Browns Mills in South Jersey. Trenton Road was shut down in the area at the time:

Miketta said the storms were connected to Tropical Storm Cindy, particularly the moisture. But even if those incidents were not tornadoes, they were incidents that people should know about - and can help explain why the region suffered damaged.

Cars were overturned in each area - as they were in areas across the state - and trees were knocked down. Miketta said the highest winds were in Browns Mills in South Jersey, hitting 70 mph.

"It doesn't matter if the wind is spinning in a circle, he said. "If you get 60-mph winds, you're going to have damage."

• Downed tree, NJ 77: Downed tree on NJ 77 southbound at South of CR 666/Monroeville-Swedesboro Rd in Upper Pittsgrove Twp. 1 lane may be blocked.
• Flooding, I-287: Flooding on I-287 southbound South of Exit 8 - Possumtown Rd in Piscataway Twp. 1 lane may be blocked.
• Flooding, NJ 35: Flooding on NJ 35 in both directions approaching south of NJ 71/H Street in Belmar.
• Flooding, US 1: Flooding on US 1 southbound approaching US 9 in Woodbridge Twp use caution.
• Downed tree, NJ 29: Downed tree on NJ 29 northbound south of Kingwood Station-Barbertown Rd in Kingwood Twp. 1 lane blocked.
• Downed tree, I-295: Downed tree on I-295 southbound approaching Exit 34 - NJ 70 in Cherry Hill Twp. Partial ramp blocked.
• Downed tree, US 130: Downed tree on US 130 southbound South of I-76 Connector in Camden right lane may be blocked.
• Flooding, Garden State Parkway: Flooding on the Garden State Parkway southbound from north of Exit 137 - NJ 28 to North of Exit 136 - Stiles St in Cranford Twp. All lanes.
• Flooding, New Jersey Turnpike: Flooding on the New Jersey Turnpike inner roadway southbound south of Interchange 12 - Carteret-Rahway in Woodbridge Twp.
• Flooding, Garden State Parkway: Flooding on the Garden State Parkway southbound from south of Exit 143A to South of Exit 143B in Irvington Twp. Right lane.
• Downed tree, NJ: Downed tree on NJ 70 westbound exiting at NJ 41/CR 154 in Cherry Hill Twp. Partial ramp blocked.

• Accident, Garden State Parkway: Accident on the Garden State Parkway express lanes southbound Exit 105 - NJ 36 in Tinton Falls. Left lane blocked.
• Accident, New Jersey Turnpike: Accident on the New Jersey Turnpike inner roadway southbound South of Interchange 7A - I-195 in Hamilton Twp. Right lane blocked.

The good news however is that the wet weather should clear out by Sunday; sunny skies are expected through early next week.

"Over the weekend, the remnants of Cindy will combine with a cold front and enhance the rainfall the front might otherwise bring to the Garden State," said Greg Postel, hurricane specialist at The Weather Channel.

Here is the forecast:

• Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 82. Light northwest wind becoming west 5 to 9 mph in the morning
• Sunday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 61.
• Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 79.
