Nearly two dozen residents were displaced and a handful of businesses were shuttered after a fire tore through a strip of buildings on Elm Street Friday night into Saturday morning.

Now the Morristown community is coming together to help their own, setting up a relief fund for the victims.

The office of Mayor Tim Dougherty announced non-perishable donations can be dropped at the Morristown Fire Bureau at 161 Speedwell Avenue for the displaced families, who received temporary lodging through the Red Cross.

Financial donations can be made by check or money order to the Town of Morristown and mailed or delivered to the Mayor and Administration office at the Morristown Town Hall, 200 South Street in Morristown.

In addition to personal hygiene products such as deodorant, tooth brushes, and toothpaste, newborn baby items are also requested as one displaced woman is currently pregnant, according to the Mayor’s Office. Diapers, wipes and other baby care needs are welcomed.

The fire burned for much of the night, with windy, frigid temperatures hampering efforts to calm the blaze, Morristown Police Lt. Stuart Greer said in a statement at 3 a.m. Saturday.

The addresses impacted were 82 through 88 Elm Street. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and is now in the hands of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

According to morristowngreen.com, Del’s Novelty & Party Supply Co. was completely destroyed, Mexican restaurant L’Estacion, Sister’s Nails, B.W. Clifford Distributors, Hair Magic, and the Town Restaurant, which was in the design phase to replace Sebastian’s Steakhouse, were also shuttered as a result of the blaze.

No one was injured as a result of the fire, according to dailyrecord.com.
