Morris Co. Police Chief Saves Drowning Girl, 11, While Vacationing

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — A police chief in Morris County is being recognized for his heroic actions during a Florida vacation.

Riverdale Police Chief Charles "Chuck" Quant Jr. received a letter of appreciation after his quick thinking saved an 11-year-old girl in Florida recently.

On July 25, while vacationing in Holmes Beach, FL, Quant noticed a young girl drowning and unresponsive in the ocean, according to officials.

Quant sprang into action, "without hesitation," and assisted in pulling the girl from the water, police said.

He immediately began administering CPR to the girl, who eventually expelled the water and was able to breathe on her own before paramedics arrived.

"Chief Quant’s life-saving intervention during his personal time off exemplifies the highest standards of public service," said Holmes Beach Police Chief William Tokajer. "His readiness to respond to a crisis, even when off-duty and far from home, speaks volumes about his character, dedication, and professionalism. He is a true credit to the Borough of Riverdale and an outstanding leader for your police department."
