Morris Habitat Dedicates Four Homes in December

as Morris Habitat dedicated four homes at three different sites in New Jersey

Randolph: The month of December is always a hectic time due to the holidays, but this year it was even more so as Morris Habitat dedicated four homes at three different sites in New Jersey! Morris Habitat’s dedication ceremonies allow them to celebrate with the future homeowners, local residents, politicians, sponsors, and volunteers who helped build the home, and are held as building nears completion. On Friday, December 11, 2015 they held two dedications. The first, a brand new home, was dedicated to the Mercado family in Perth Amboy, NJ . Noris Mercado will be living in this home, a joint venture between Perth Amboy Redevelopment Team for Enterprise (PARTNER), the Perth Amboy Housing Authority and Morris Habitat, with her two children and grandson. Sponsors for this home include Investors Bank, City of Perth Amboy and HUD funds. Approximately 1,500 volunteers worked 11,625 hours to provide this family with this safe, affordable home. Noris said, "I never thought I would be a homeowner. Since my parents were never homeowners, I wanted to set an example for my children to show I can do it." She and her children were excited to be in the home in time for the holidays! In the afternoon of December 11th, Morris Habitat dedicated a duplex in Morristown, NJ to the Farrell and Wetherhead families. Akirah Farrell, a single mom, will be living in the top unit with her 6-year-old daughter. Ann Wetherhead will live in the first floor of the duplex. Sponsors include Weichert Realtors, Bike & Build, Inc. and HUD funds. Over 2,700 volunteers (including all those who came out to the Women's Build in May 2015) spent 20,000 hours working on this home. On Wednesday, December 16, 2015 Morris Habitat proudly dedicated a renovated home in Green Township to the Martinez family. Jennifer and her three children are very excited to have a stable environment where they will have room to grow and play! Sponsors include Green Township, NJ, Bike & Build, Inc., Selective Insurance, and The Blessed Kateri Council Knights of Columbus. There were 533 volunteers (including those from the National Civilian Community Corps- NCCC- who worked here for 6 weeks in the fall) spending 4,000 hours to renovate this home. All in all, Morris Habitat celebrated six families becoming homeowners in 2015, and ten new homes are currently under construction. They build all year long and are always looking for volunteers.
