Morris Habitat for Humanity Starts New "Aging in Place" Program

Helping Seniors Stay in Their Homes as Long as Possible

Thanks to a Capacity Building Grant from Habitat for Humanity International Morris Habitat can expand their Neighborhood Revitalization Program to now include a new "Aging in Place" program. The new program will be in full swing by this spring!

Richard B. Cooke, Homeownership Sustainability Coordinator will oversee the program. Described as "Home Support for Seniors," the home repair program is targeted at mobility, accessibility and energy efficiency improvements that enable senior residents to continue to live in their own homes longer and to be able to maintain their independence. Eligibility is based on age, income guidelines, home ownership and up to date tax and mortgage payments.

Morris Habitat for Humanity will provide the volunteer labor force to undertake such repairs as correcting code violations, simple water leaks, adding grab bars and handrails, and roof repairs. Basic landscaping projects, such as yard cleanup and sidewalk repairs, also can be performed.

The homeowner's responsibility is to pay for purchased materials unless they have been donated. State-licensed electricians and plumbers often participate "at cost" to help keep the homeowner's expenses to a minimum.

“This is a wonderful addition to all the other programs that Morris Habitat has established,” according to Cooke.
