Morristown Bakery & Cafe Closing After Nearly 20 Years

"It was a very hard decision, but it was a decision I made," said the bakery's owner.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — After operating in Morristown for nearly two decades, the owner of a baked goods staple in town announced she will be closing its doors.

Andrea Lekberg, owner of the Artist Baker on 16 Cattano Avenue, announced on Monday that she will not be renewing her lease come Sept. 30 of this year.

“It was a very hard decision, but it was a decision I made,” Lekberg said. “So, you know, so many thank yous to everybody, and I’m telling you now because I want the next few months to be able to see all of you.”

Residents are devastated by the news, with one social media user calling The Artist Baker “irreplaceable.”

“Oh, what a loss to Morristown! Thank you for sharing your creativity and community spirit with all of us,” one user wrote. “Will have to get a lot of avocado toast and coffee cake and . . . all your delicious offerings . . . between now and the end of September.”

“Best of luck in whatever new adventure awaits. We are losing a treasure,” wrote another.

Lekberg said she encourages residents to pop in and see her and her staff before the place closes for good. She also encourages potential artisans and business owners to come check out the space, hoping it’s filled with “like the next generation.”

“Thank you for all your support, and you know, you made The Artist Baker what it is, and I think about the future of this shop and the area,” she said. “If you know someone who would like to open up a business, another artisan, have them reach out or come by the shop, because… I would like the next generation on this, you know, for this space to be as satisfying to them as it was to me.”

The Artist Baker is open Tuesday through Sunday, with the kitchen open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Click here to learn more.
