Morristown Man Faces 1st-Degree Murder Charge In Fatal Shooting

Tyrell Lansing, 27, is in Oklahoma pending extradition on charges of killing Raijah Scott of Cedar Knolls, on Aug. 18, authorities said.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — A Morristown man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a Cedar Knolls man on Aug. 18, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office announced.

Tyrell Lansing, 27, who is awaiting extradition from Oklahoma where he was arrested Aug. 19, has been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree certain persons not to have weapons or ammunition, and fourth-degree possession of prohibited weapons, Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll said.

Lansing is accused of fatally shooting Raijah Scott, 35, of Cedar Knolls in the early hours of Aug. 18 in a parking lot on Clyde Potts Drive in Morristown. Scott was wound dead of multiple gunshot wounds after authorities received a 911 call shortly after 1 a.m., authorities said.

Morris County Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Di Wang ruled the manner of death to be homicide after an autopsy, authorities said.

Investigators learned Lansing and Scott knew each other and that Lansing shot Scott multiple times before fleeing in a motor vehicle, authorities said.

Lansing was captured in Oklahoma on Aug. 19, and remains in custody there, Carroll said.

The charges were part of a joint announcement by Carroll, Morris County Chief of Detectives Christoph Kimker, Morris County Sheriff James Gannon, and Morristown Police Department Acting Chief Darnell Richardson.

Assisting in the investigation and arrest were numerous law enforcement agencies, including members of the Morristown Police Department, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, the New Jersey State Police, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.
