MORRISTOWN, NJ - Mayor Timothy Dougherty issued an executive order limiting all liquor establishments in Morristown to 250 patrons and a 10 p.m. due to concerns of the novel coronavirus of COVID-19.

The curfew effective immediately until further notice, officials said.

“COVID-19 does not discriminate," Dougherty said in a statement. "So far it has affected residents of our state from teens to over eighty years old. So, it is imperative that the Town take a leadership role in establishing protocols to reinforce what we know to be practices that prevent the spread of this terrible illness, including social distancing. While our restaurants and nightlife are a popular draw for visitors, we must take every precaution to protect the public and prevent community spread.”

Officials said the goal is to enforce the policy directive from the State of New Jersey and CDC guide- lines to minimize gatherings of large groups of people to prevent exposure to and transmission of COVID-19 to patrons, workers, and first responders.

Here's what else you should know:

How It Spreads

The virus that causes COVID-19 is spreading from person-to-person. Someone who is actively sick with COVID-19 can spread the illness to others. That is why CDC recommends that these patients be isolated either in the hospital or at home (depending on how sick they are) until they are better and no longer pose a risk of infecting others.
There is currently no vaccine for COVID-19.
While the best way to prevent illness is to avoid virus exposure, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention always recommends taking preventive actions to contain the spread of viruses.

This includes:

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipes.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

Residents who have questions about the virus can contact the State of New Jersey's hotline at 1 (800) 222-1222. The hotline is home of the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System, and is staffed 24 hours a day by state health workers.
