For the first time, the rankings for 2022-23 included some health equity measures, such as hospitals that provide more care to low-income patients and those with racial disparities in medical and surgical outcomes.
U.S. News made several changes to its 2020 hospital visit evaluation to normalize its 2022 rankings in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
All hospital visits in March 2020 were excluded, as were visits in which a patient was diagnosed with COVID-19. Visits to any hospital were excluded if they occurred during a month in 2020 when the hospital's COVID-19 rate was higher than the national average.
“The hospitals named to the U.S. News Honor Roll excel across numerous specialties and service lines,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “When patients and their medical professionals are considering their options for care, the rankings are designed to help them identify hospitals that are superior in the kind of care they may need.”
