Morristown Org. Pauses Volunteer Work Due To COVID-19 Wave

MORRISTOWN, NJ — The Market Street Mission, a Morristown-based nonprofit, temporarily canceled all volunteer assignments because of the recent COVID-19 wave. The organization says it will continue providing meals, shelter and spiritual and emotional support to anyone in need.

The Mission currently provides meals to the community at the door of 9 Market St., beginning at 6:15 a.m. for breakfast and 5:30 p.m. for dinner. For details on weekend mealtimes, call 973-538-0431, or visit marketstreet.org.

"During our 132-year history, The Market Street Mission has served through six health crises, including the flu pandemic of 1889-1890, the Spanish Flu and the Asian Flu," the organization said in a news release. "Through it all, by God's grace and with the support of compassionate donors, we have met the needs of our neighbors, providing meals to the hungry, shelter to the homeless and hope to all who come to our doors. The staff once again stands ready to help in the face of this latest Covid-19 variant known as Omicron."

The organization provides more than 110,000 meals per year. The Market Street Mission also helps fight alcoholism, substance abuse, hunger and homelessness throughout northern and central New Jersey.

"The Mission is taking a conscientious approach during this latest Covid-19 wave, implementing general precautions to ensure the safety of our staff, overnight guests, addiction recovery & transition residents and thrift store customers," the organization said.

Morristown saw 328 new cases from Dec. 17 to Wednesday, bringing the town to 2,969 cases since the pandemic began. That's an increase of 12.4 percent to Morristown's case total in 11 days. Read more: As Cases Surge, How Much Has COVID Spread In Greater Morristown?
