Morristown Teen Gives Free Music Tutoring to Kids, Earns Girl Scout Award

Rebecca Lalk wanted to solve a problem that was impacting her community.

She did just that, and so much more, on her way to earning the highest award in Girl Scouts.

Lalk, who achieved her Gold Award organized a program for fourth and fifth grade music students to receive free tutoring that included help from more than a dozen of her peers.

Lalk was tasked with completing at least 80 hours of a leadership program after discovering an issue in the community and finding a solution.

“I noticed that many elementary school students drop out of music,” Lalk said in a statement. “I thought if families had access to free lessons it might improve the retention rate.”

So a total of 13 Morristown High School students joined Lalk in providing more than 200 hours of free tutoring to 14 elementary school students from the area.

Lalk is herself an involved musician, part of the marching band, jazz band, Tri-M Music Honors Society, French Honor Society, Math Team, and Science League as a junior at Morristown High School.

The teen also serves as a disc jockey for the school’s radio station WJSV and has been part of Girl Scout Troop No. 80415 since kindergarten.
