Icy Storm In Morristown? See Timeline, Forecast Ahead Of Friday Commutes

Rain will transition to freezing rain Friday morning before becoming sleet and snow, according to the National Weather Service.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — After a weekend of heavy snowfall, the National Weather Service expects minimal snow accumulation during Friday's storm. But with freezing rain in the forecast, anyone driving or even walking in the Morristown area will need to practice caution, according to forecasters.

The National Weather Service included Greater Morristown in a winter-weather advisory for 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. Rain will transition into freezing rain Friday morning, then becoming sleet and snow before ending late Friday afternoon, the agency says.

Forecasters expect up to a tenth-inch of ice in the area.

The National Weather Service also anticipates rain and dense fog later Thursday. After the wintry mix during the day Friday, there's a chance of snow before 7 p.m., according to forecasters.

  • Thursday: Rain. Patchy dense fog. High near 46. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
  • Thursday night: Rain. Patchy dense fog before 11 p.m. Steady temperature around 46. Light and variable wind becoming southwest 5 to 10 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.
  • Friday: Rain before 5 p.m., then rain, snow, and sleet likely. Temperature falling to around 32 by 5 p.m. North wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half-inch possible.
  • Friday night: A chance of snow before 7 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New snow accumulation of less than a half-inch possible.
  • Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 27. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph.
