
The Mountain Lakes Rowing Club prepares for its biggest spring racing season yet. The team, which practices on Lake Hopatcong, recently welcomed a new Girls’ Varsity Coach and has added new boats and equipment to its arsenal along with an expanded regatta line up.
Zach Spitzer joins the team as Varsity Girls Coach. Zach began rowing at Niskayuna High School and continued at Syracuse University. After completing undergraduate and graduate degrees in Secondary Education, he returned home to coach his former high school before becoming Head Novice Boys Coach at PNR Mercer. While at Mercer, Zach also coached numerous summer teams, where his boats raced in the Grand Finals at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta and Grand Finals at US Rowing Club Nationals.
Zach joins Head Coach and Varsity Boys’ coach Robert Welsh who is a former high school national champion, two-time US Rowing Club National Champion, and 4-year rower at Yale. Becca Gero, a seasoned collegiate rower and former captain on the Mountain Lakes team, rounds out the coaching staff as Head Novice Coach.

In addition to the added coaching staff, Mountain Lakes rowing is expanding its season and will complete in a total of nine regattas. Kids that discover this sport, develop a passion for it. They earn teamwork, commitment, and motivation along with technical proficiency and build confidence along with incredible physical fitness.
Mountain Lakes Rowing Club was established in 2007 and has quickly grown into one of New Jersey’s most competitive junior rowing teams. The Club offers a comprehensive year-round program with competitive racing seasons in Spring, Summer and Fall. Athletes who compete in other sports are welcome to join the season(s) that suits their schedule. The Club also offers Winter training at a local gym supplemented by technique sessions at the West Point Military Academy’s indoor rowing tanks which are open to prospective team members.

Home base is Lee’s Marina on Lake Hopatcong in Morris County and junior rower’s grades 8-12 hail from over 15 towns in the surrounding area. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams practice weekdays and Saturdays. Spring is great opportunity to learn this sport whether you are interested in learning to row or being a coxswain. All experience levels are welcome.
