Neighbors Show Support For Morris County Engineer Involved In Thursday NJ Transit Crash

Thomas Gallagher, a Morris Plains resident, has been identified as the engineer. Neighbors say he loved his job, according to reports.

When Morris County resident Tom Jones learned his longtime neighbor and friend was the engineer involved in the Hoboken station train crash on Thursday, he walked next door to show his support and condolences, according to a report by NJ.com

The NJ Transit train crash at Hoboken station killed a 34-year-old woman and injured 108 people during the morning commute. Thomas Gallagher, a 48-year-old Morris Plains resident, has been identified in multiple news reports as the engineer at the time of the crash.

"I immediately went next door, to tell them, to let them know, 'Hey, we're here for you,'" said Jones, who noted Gallagher loved his job with NJ Transit, according to NJ.com. "I spoke with his mother and mother-in-law, and saw the children and felt very strongly they needed their privacy so they can deal with this whole mess, for (lack) of a better term, as a family."

Officials confirmed that 108 people were injured when the train crashed into platform 5 at 8:45 a.m. The victim, Fabiola Bittar de Kroon, was standing on the platform and died after being hit by debris, according to officials.

Gallagher was released from the hospital on Thursday evening and is cooperating with investigators, ABC News reported.
